August builds the systems behind CDA’s work: the pipelines, warehouses, models and AI tools that turn a company’s own data into numbers it can defend.

August started doing data science for clients more than ten years ago and built Capitol Data Analytics to be the analytics team a growing company would hire if it were staffing one in house. The technical side of CDA’s work runs through August: data warehouses and reporting pipelines, statistical models, and AI systems that have to be accurate before anyone relies on them, built in SQL, Python, R and Tableau on AWS and Azure.

August also writes. A weekly data series tests popular claims against public data, and August’s analysis of what a booked plumbing job actually costs ran as a bylined feature in CONTRACTOR.

Alex Severn

Cofounder

Alex leads CDA’s client relationships and the reporting clients use every week: dashboards built around the decisions a team actually makes.

Alex works with CDA’s clients day to day, turning what a team needs to decide into reports it will actually open. Alex specializes in Tableau and dashboard design, including dashboards built to work with a screen reader, where reading order, color contrast and plain language descriptions matter as much as the chart.
